So I am a big fan of horror movies. I like both gory and non gory ones. As long as they are scary and don’t suck they are good but I cannot list all of them. So here are 10 horror films that I feel are a must see each Halloween (no particular order).
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) The original is better than any of the sequels or remakes and was way ahead of it’s time. Surprisingly this movie is not very gory (depending on what you mean by gory anyway) more of a psychological thriller but it is pretty scary and is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Maniac This guy has some serious issues, it’s like he is crazy or something. That’s an understatement to say the least. This is a gory one about a guy that likes to sleep with mannequins,(and thats the nice part) first he has to dress them up. Now, where to get new clothes and hair?
Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell Here’s one about a dog. Though this is no ordinary dog. This dog is in league with the devil. Little does the unsuspecting family know what lies in wait for them.
Dawn of the Dead (1974) Here’s one I am sure you have all seen. If not, this is a tongue in cheek look at how to survive when the dead come back to life. No better place to go than shopping, well sorta. This is a comedy but it has definite serious moments.
Bad Taste What did Peter Jackson do before he made it big with the LOTR trilogy? He made bad low budget horror movies about aliens that come to Earth and turn the people of a small town into their fast food delicacy.
Nekromantik This is a sick one for sure. A German movie about a couple that well, likes to sleep with dead things. A human body is their first choice but animal carcasses will do on a slow night. This is not for the squeamish but a must see for a real gore fanatic.
An American Werewolf in London Not sure if this is a really a horror movie but none the less when I was a kid it scared the S#%*@! out of me. 2 American dudes in London out for a stroll in the moors. Oh no a werewolf, this is another tongue in cheek horror type movie.
Motel Hell Here is another comedy horror movie, seems most of the movies on this list are funny in some way or another but none of them are all fun and games. Neither is this one about farmer Vincent and his fritters.
The Return of the Living Dead Here is another living dead movie. There have been many made but only a few stand the test of time. This is one. A group of punk rockers decide to wait in a graveyard until their buddy gets off work at the nearby medical supply warehouse. Again the massive amounts of gore are shrouded by comical scenarios but there is really nothing funny about what happens in this movie. The ending is what makes it a real winner.
House of 1000 Corpses Rob Zombies debut as a film maker was a success. It is definitely reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw… but wow what a great violent movie. Bill Moseley is by far a great actor if you need a crazy guy. He was great as Chop Top in TCM 2 and he revisits the same sort of character again. If I ever make a horror movie he gets a part no matter what!
Well there is a list of great horror movies. I could add more but I said I would do only 10. There are actually 11 but who’s counting? Do you like horror movies? If so what are some of your favorites that I did not list? Or if you like any that I did list feel free to comment on them.

I saw Devil Dog when I was around eight years old, and was still having dreams about it years later. I’m not sure if that means it was a really good horror movie, or if it means I should never, ever, watch it again.

I have not seen it in years either. I only really remember bits and pieces. I do remember I liked it alot, but I was younger than. I am going to buy it off of Ebay one of these days, Though it always seems to be expensive. I hope it is as good as it was when I was a kid. If not, well I am a huge Richard Crenna fan anyway.
He was great in the Rambo movies.

You obviously know nothing about horror, no offense. House Of a Thousand Corpses? Bad Taste? You’re not a horror fan, you’re a schlock fan and that’s fine. This list is laughable, and THAT is why you’re a schlock fan. Not to mention the list contains a movie by that hack, Rob Zombie. You like what you like, but this list is not a horror list, my friend.

You talk a big game! Feel free to name some better horror movies, maybe I will like them more than the ones I included in above list. Then next year I can present a better list.
You indicate that my list contains old movies and I should update, can I assume this to mean you are going to recommend newer releases? If so, I doubt any of them will beat this list.

Ran across your site on elegantthemes so I thought I’d check it out.
I still have nightmares from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I wasn’t too big on the Rob Zombie ones though. Just gruesome – not enough scare for me. I’ll have to check out a couple of these ones you have listed.
By the way, who cares if people don’t agree with your taste – its YOUR taste, so it can’t be wrong.

Okay, seriously. Just because it has older movies on it doesn’t mean he hasn’t seen any newer horror movies. Honestly, there aren’t many new ‘horror’ movies out there that can scare anyone unless they are dumb blondes, thanks. :]

Hey Chris, thanks for the comment. The zombies have a pie fight towards the end!!! How could it be anything other than a comedy?

Love the list, I don’t see how everyone can say that “Rob Zombie is a hack”. I purposely re-watched all of them through out the past month and i can’t pick anything out wrong with them. He did justice to Halloween, and made it more popular for the kids now saying “that shit isn’t scary”. Not to mention the homage he paid to movies like TCM and other great classics from the 70s, the style he films in all together was amazing.
I DARE… ANYONE to find a better ending than the devils rejects, you hate them but at the same time you feel for them… best ending to a movie ever.
but other than that I love the list really good, and you happen to be the first list i’ve stumbled upon that doesn’t have “Rosemary’s Baby” on it, it was shit a 2 hour long waste.
I guess I need to criticize you a bit!, you didn’t have house on haunted hill (old and new) the old one didn’t do the trick on scaring me but Vincent Price was and is a god, and the new one well I shut it off when the black shit came out of the wall (which was like what 10 mins before the end) and I didn’t watch it for about 2 years after that.
anyways, nice list.
