Facebook will add friendly URLs

By: Ben Partch » On: June 9th, 2009

I reopened my Facebook account today to a pleasant suprise. FB is going to implement human readable URLs for user profiles, so instead of:

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

They will be:

http://www.facebook.com/yourusername

According to their site, this change will take effect on Saturday June 13th, at 12:01 a.m. EDT on a first come first serve basis. The image on their blog post shows that you will have varying choices based on your current user name as well as the option to make one up from scratch. So, if you have the perfect name in mind, you better be fast. :P

This is a great thing IMO. It will be so much easier to tell someone how to access your page when not online. Plus it just plain looks better! ;)

Edit: Okay the time has come and gone and I have set a new URL, you can find me at: http://www.facebook.com/bpartch not the URL I was hoping for but the one I figured I would end up with. I wanted to get /ben but I noticed that it was already taken even prior to set time. Kind of a bummer but oh well. :)
