Up, Up, Upgrade and Away!

By: Ben Partch » On: September 24th, 2007

I remember back when I was in grade school and would be absent. When I returned a day later, I would have a sub conscious feeling that I had missed something. Not necessarily school work or learning something that had been taught the day before, just that I had missed out on something drastically important.

The same can be said for the internet. Or at least with my RSS feeds and the various sites I frequent on a day to day basis. When I am away from my comp for an extended period (not very often) and return later that day or the next. I feel as though I have missed out. Part of this is just habit, to some extent it is addiction. Though it goes beyond missing out on the latest topics at a message board or chatting with friends on messenger or even work for that matter, but thats a whole other article.

The point of this article is to discuss how fast things change on the world wide web or with web related technology in general. If you are not a daily web surfer you can miss out on alot. I am generally on or around the net everyday, some days more than others but still, I tend to stay up to date on the latest releases of the software I use. Wether it be the latest version of WordPress or the various browsers I have installed, windows updates, anti-virus, messenger, you name it. The list can go on and on and on.

A couple of months ago my stereo system died. All I have left are these small computer speakers that came with my comp. They are small and sound rather tiny (especially when listening to heavy metal).

I am too cheap and/or lazy to go by another. So needless to say I have not been enjoying as much music as I usually do. Though every now and then the desire to hear some music outweighs my lack of desire to hear it through these speakers and I start up my audio app.

Each time I have started iTunes over the last 2 months it starts up and tells me there is a new version. So I download that, it updates Quicktime too so it takes a few, even on my DSL connection. By the time it is done I am either no longer in the mood or have to get up and go do something else.

This even extends off the web to cell phones, MP3 players, video game machines, even computers themselves. Again the list can go on and on and on. As soon as a product is released, the maker starts working on the next version. So you are out of style as soon as you open the box.

Hey look at my new: Insert product title here
Wow, that is nice but I just got the new version and it does this and this and this…

I am not saying this is always a bad thing. Sometimes it is vitally important to release a new version. Plus I like technology as much as the next guy or girl but it seems that upgrading can get in the way of the daily enjoyment of the last version that worked good enough already. Just ask someone who has upgraded to Vista. :P

Hi Ben, electroskan.com here……in your opening para you mentioned about being absent in school and the feeling of missing something, yes it happens to me as well. Often I feel like a new student when I return to my class after a day or two and it takes me some time to warm up to my class mates whom I have known for something like…. well all my life. The same thing happens to me whenever I return to SP after a break….. with all the new threads in GC, so much happens in a few days time, it’s like you can’t take your eyes off it, if you do you miss something important.

Yes that is exactly what I was talking about, just feeling as though I have missed out on something, maybe it is just being there. :)

Yes, It’s crazy how fast new technology comes out these days. I get the same message every single time I open iTunes. I’ve been ignoring it for the last month or so!

I see a lot of talk about Vista and how the people are sorry they made the change. My supervisor just upgraded to Vista both on his laptop and desktop and seems to like it and has not real major problems besides a couple small networking issues where folder redirection doesn’t work like it’s suppose to.

BTW: Haven’t been by for a while. I like the redesign. :)

    Hey Deron!

I would love to check out Vista, but will not be upgrading my existing computers. One of these days I might buy a new one with it already installed. Though it will be awhile before I actually do it, plus I would rather try a mac out first I think.

BTW: Haven’t been by for a while. I like the redesign. :)

Thanks, though as with all of them I am still not finished with what I want to do and can never come up with any good topics for new articles. The good news is I have not started a redesign already as I like this one alright and I doubt I am going to beat it anytime soon.

hehe, sounds like me. I’m very surprised in myself for not changing my blog’s design yet. usually I’m never satisfied with what I design and am always wanting a complete overhaul.

Maybe that says something about our design skills progressing? As we gain more knowledge in designing our designs get better thus less of a need to constantly be changing. :)

    We can only hope! :P
